Frustrated, I purchased a used 2009 Spyder GS SE5 Feb,2017 with only 3,388 miles on it (previous owner averaged less than 450 mi./yr) . I'm semi-retired engineer I drive it on average less than 20 miles a week, I'm use to fixing most anything electro-mechanical. After about 4 months it began with Ck DPS po551,552. It turns out after doing some research that BRP/Can Am (herein BRP) had a recall on this (NHTSA 10959806) and the previous owner had the DPS unit replaced under the recall within the 1st 2500 miles. Apparently the replacement DPS was faulty since it went out again in less than 2000 miles, but after myself & the local Spyder service center contacted BRP several times they refused to even provide part; the revised DPS Unit. After quoting me over $1600 parts & labor to replace it, I asked the Service tech if they could just shut off or disable the DPS to eliminate the annoying scroll "Ck DPS" and I would live with no power steering. They said they could only remove the scroll it by replacing the DPS {$1600}. I left knowing power steering was probably only effective 5% of the time so I could live without it.
Within another 1000 miles for no apparent reason the display flashes "Brake Failure" after consulting this forums and different fixes to no avail I brought it in for service. They connected to the BUDS once again and stated the Master Cylinder failed {really; at only 4900 miles} the worst part is the proprietary BUDS interface is required for the instillation (bleeding, reset) process. I paid $861 for them to install new master cylinder & brake fluid flush.
Within another 600 miles for no apparent reason the display flashes "Ck Transmission" PO826 (shift switches) . After doing some research and taking apart the paddle shift switch assembly, I was able to replace the 2 OMRON micro switches for $21. No more issues with that.
Now the other day or only 1800 miles since I had the Master Cyl. replaced the display flashes "Brake Failure" again. And once again everything checks out fine, (Fluid level switches, brake limit switch, etc.) I drive this vehicle very moderately, no sudden stops, no burnouts, that being said I hypothesize that the slightest electrical blip can trigger a fault code. I refuse to be at the mercy of the dealer service, other than not owning the $700 to $1000 BUDS diagnostic software, If so I should be able to fix all of this myself.
Maybe I purchased a lemon or am too use to the reliability of my 2 Toyota's with over 130,000 miles on each with no part failures, just routine maintenance. You can purchase an OBD2 Scanner for your $20,000+ Automobile starting at $25 for a basic model that will read codes & reset check engine messages, It seams like a crime that BRP/Can Am charges over $700 for there entry level proprietary scanner! Then you have to pay annually for a license to use it! WARNING: If you are a DIY individual who would prefer not to shell out $500 to replace a part that cost less than 1/10 of the repair cost stay away from BRP Products. There not only problematic & unreliable but by the time you reach the mileage of my Toyota's I could probable have purchased this vehicle 5x over!
Post Script; The reverse trike I built called NRG (former T-Rex style Trike) has 39,000 miles on the original motor & drive train, it has been running flawless thanks to the Honda donor bike.
